Starting Your Pup the Wildrose Way (3 to 8 months old)
This course focuses on starting your retriever (all breeds) on the proper path to becoming a well-rounded, hunting or adventure partner. Gentle, highly repetitive methods are used to show you step-by-step how to start your pup from crate training to lining retrieves. Topics include obedience, steadiness, promoting calm behaviors, patience, introduction to birds, memories, doubles, early marks, reading your pup, k-9 demeanor and much more. Participants are invited to bring their pup to work with and will have the opportunity to handle a variety of different dogs at various levels of training, a real hands-on opportunity. (All breeds welcome).
Basic Gundog Training Workshop - 6 months and older
An interactive, hands-on complete course suitable for waterfowl and upland gundogs of all breeds. The instructions follow the concepts of positive training presented in our training DVD collection: canine behaviors, the motivators, our cycle training model, steadiness, delivery, lining, handling, hunting cover, memories, all accomplished while avoiding the use of electric collars and force fetch… a natural way.
Advanced Gundog Training
Open to all breeds this course builds upon the principles presented in our basic training course, training developed specifically for the needs of the wingshooter: upland and waterfowl. Unique methods to get results the positive way: reading your dog, steadiness, building memory through TDMs and permanent blinds, quartering, how to gain and reestablish focus: resets and re-directs. Our concept develops superb relationships between hunters and gundogs resulting in a calm, effective retriever/flusher to be envied.
Double Gun and Retriever Classic
Combining wingshooting with training, this is the course to evaluate gundog skill levels and tune up before season or a competition. Three days of wingshooting scenarios with live bird flights combined with training clinics. Double guns, 16-gauge and below are used to provide a traditional sporting flair. Transitional exercises with live birds will include flights over water, flooded timber, field shoots and walk ups. Some sites may offer hunting over pointers as well. ½ day hunts followed by ½ day training clinics that will address training needs.
Open to all breeds, this is a great advanced course to identify weaknesses in practical field situations, learn new training techniques, hone hunting skills, prepare for the excitement of a competition or a real wingshoot and it's the perfect pre-season tune up for hunters and their dogs. A great progression following our basic and advanced training course.
Diabetic Alert Dog Training Conference
The DAD Training Conference serves as a resource for sharing information about the development, abilities, care and training of diabetic service dogs. The focus is on enhanced animal performance, scent detection, improving handler skills, understanding public access requirements, canine health care and first aid, canine behaviors, improving obedience skills and much more.
Practical exercises will be presented with trainers available to offer suggestions. The course is an opportunity for annual re-certification for diabetic alert dogs as well. Open to all DAD dogs and their handlers as well as individuals interested in the program.
Adventure Dog Training Course
Our unique training course for the dogs of outside adventures is the first of its kind. Dogs of the trail need specialized training just as do gundogs given the unusual activities they may encounter. Training for dogs that complement an active family which embraces a sporting lifestyle: hiking, climbing, mountain biking, backpacking, camping, running, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, etc. Dog training for companions that will complement a sporting lifestyle.
This course addresses all the necessary skills sets for Adventure Dog Certification. Control on the trail, retrieving, gunfire, fording streams, biking, kayaking, and quite a long list of sub skills needed to create a superb outside companion for adventurers.
ADC- is offered for the accomplished adventure dog. The required 14 skills sets (merits) are covered in the ADC basic training course, many merits can be accomplished at the course.
ADC - Accomplish 80% of required merits
ADC-MT - Master Trekker - 100% accomplished
All breeds welcomed to participate.
Basic and Advanced Handlers Courses
This Basic Handler's Workshop will cover the Wildrose method of handling gundogs-obedience to hand signals. Emphasis is on developing the handler's skills. Focus topics: canine behaviors, reading your dog, delivery, whistle commands, steadiness, handling, hunting cover, and lining, all based on Wildrose training principles.
The Advanced Handler's Workshop will focus on the Wildrose positive methods for advanced retriever handling, both upland and waterfowl, hand signals to blinds. Emphasis will be on developing handlers' skills for transitional training and hunting situations based on the unique Wildrose training principles. Topics include: handling on water, advanced steadying drills, upland walk ups, lining on multiples, memories (circle) and blinds. A transitional training exercise will be conducted to include all participants. Participants will need a dog that is familiar with hand signals. Bring waders, duck calls, rain gear and shotgun with one box of light load shells.
On-the-Road Seminars, Basic and Seasoned Retriever Training (Open to all breeds).
Our "Wildrose Way" courses appear at various sites across the country. Prices vary according to location. These are highly interactive, progressively presented dog training clinics. Wildrose shares our unique, positive training methodology, which has gained enormous credibility among hunters, adventurers and competitors alike. Learn, firsthand, the methods used to train Drake and Deke, the Ducks Unlimited mascots as demonstrated on many television hunting programs including DU's World of Ducks and Benelli's American Bird Hunter with Tom Knapp.
Participants will learn how to train their gundogs for a variety of game through positive reinforcement, avoiding the use of e-collars, force fetch, spike collars and other mechanical training techniques. You will see the difference in dogs after just one day!
